Argentina - Summer Program for Spanish Teachers

Summer
Cordoba, Argentina (Map)

SUNY Geneseo's "Studies Abroad for Better Educators of Spanish" (SABES) program focuses on the most current and proven pedagogy relevant to the teaching and learning of Spanish as a second language. Through a three-week, full-immersion experience in beautiful Córdoba, Argentina, each summer we offer a specialized, 3-credit graduate course that is instructed and hosted by Universidad Nacional de Córdoba's Facultad de Lenguas - a school internationally recognized for its academic excellence and a Geneseo partner since 2010.

Argentina's Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (http://www.unc.edu.ar/) was one of the first established in the American continent and is the nation's oldest. Founded in the early 1600s, its core administrative buildings are located in what is known as the Manzana de las Luces (Block of Lights)-a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The historical city of Córdoba is Argentina's second most important city and the urban and cultural heart of the nation's central region. Nestled in a vast valley surrounded by sierras, its microclimate is characterized by mild temperatures most of the year. The city itself is a blend of Spanish Colonial and modern architecture, and is laced by pedestrian promenades, rivers, and streams, as well as green areas such as Sarmiento Park. Public transportation is accessible and economical.

UNC is recognized for its academic excellence, consistently ranking among Argentina's top five institutions of higher education. It is also renowned for being the alma mater of several of the nation's former presidents, including Carlos Saúl Menem.

Fieldtrips

In order to enrich participants' experience of Argentinean life and the country's landscapes, the program includes field trips to nearby historical and natural landmarks, including La Manzana Jesuítica, Villa Carlos Paz, and El Peñón del Águila. The price of these activities is included in the cost of the program.

Enrollment will be limited to 10 students. Participants must have earned or be pursuing a Spanish teaching degree and must possess command of the Spanish language at the Advanced-Low level according to the ACTFL's Guidelines for Foreign Language Proficiency. Applicants must be (or have been) in good academic standing at their most current home institution, with no disciplinary issues on record.

In response to the needs expressed by practicing Spanish teachers for short-term, graduate-level courses taught abroad, SUNY Geneseo's Department of Languages and Literatures is pleased to announce the inauguration of its SABES program, a 3-credit, 3-week intensive experience especially designed for practicing or aspiring Spanish teachers.

The 2015 course offering, "Métodos y enfoques en la enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera", will cover:

The linguistic and psychological theories that serve as the foundation for diverse approaches and methodologies successfully employed in the teaching of a foreign language;
Current innovations in second language pedagogy, focusing on the communicative approach, Total Physical Response methods, and the impact of information technology in second language learning.
The relationship between theory and pedagogical design, as well as traditional, contemporary and hybrid approaches to the teaching of a foreign language; and
The tools necessary for learning not only to design and implement new foreign language course curricula, but also to evaluate and assess course and program effectiveness.

Housing is with host families in the vicinity of Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. This provides participants further opportunities to develop their Spanish language skills and to become fully immersed in the culture of Argentina.

Associate Professor of Spanish with the Department of Languages and Literatures, Dr. Rose McEwen grew up in Guatemala and has had extensive experience establishing and directing study abroad programs in Argentina, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Peru. She coordinates the college's Latin American Studies program and is a former Faculty Fellow for International Programs. Email mcewen@geneseo.edu.

To prepare participants for this program, pre-departure activities will be held on the Geneseo campus during the preceding Spring semester.

Non-Geneseo students will receive written materials and personal communication if unable to attend these meetings.
