Peru - Delco Abroad: 12 Week Summer Intensive Spanish Program 062

Summer
Cusco, Peru (Map)

This program was designed to provide students seeking to fulfill Spanish language requirements at the beginning, intermediate or advanced levels the experience of studying the language, and Hispanic cultures and literatures in one of the most ethnically, historically and naturally rich regions of the world.

The Inca Empire, also known as the Tahuantinsuyu (meaning "the four regions"), was the largest pre-Columbian empire in the continent. Nestled within the Andes Mountains, Cusco was the Inca administrative, political, and military center. During Spanish Colonial times, Cusco's downtown was transformed into a Plaza de Armas, formed by a rectangular mall around which the Spanish erected governmental buildings, churches and other significant structures over the ruined foundations of Inca temples. The city's pre-Columbian monuments and traditions colorfully harmonize with, yet unwaveringly stand against, elements of the Colonial past while ambivalently integrating the "modern" present.

Cultural Field Trips

Program participants receive one or two field trips (depending on the duration of their program) that complement the academic component of the program and enrich their experience of the culture of Perú, the Andean regions and the Hispanic world. These outings highlight different elements of the region, including its topography, pre-Columbian heritage, colonial past, religious tradition, arts and folklore.

Field Trips Offered:

  • Machu Picchu: An icon of Ancient Incan civilization, Machu Picchu (meaning "Old Peak" in Quechua) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Students will enjoy a one-day excursion.
  • Saqsayhuaman: The former capital of the Inca Empire, this walled complex on the norther outskirts of Cusco is one of four ruins to be explored.
  • Sacred Valley: The heartland of the Incan Empire, this valley carved by Urubamba River was the site of much maize cultivation.
  • Cusco city walking tour: Explore the city of Cusco with an Delco Abroad staff member to understand the city's robust history and unique architecture.

Students must be in good academic standing with an acceptable disciplinary record.
