South Korea - Korean Studies Summer School at Sogang University 327

Summer
Seoul, South Korea (Map)

Join us in Seoul, South Korea at Sogang University for the Summer School for Korean Studies.  The program lasts about four weeks from late June until late July.

Students will take six credit hours.  The program includes one two-day field trip and several cultural fieldworks, as well as many other extracurricular activities.

Students spend four hours in language classes and two hours in cultural classes each day.

Sogang is one of Korea's most prestigious universities.  Founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Sogang today has an enviable reputation as a dynamic center of academic excellence.  Less than 10% of Sogang's student body today is Catholic.  The summer school attracts not only students from around the world but also Korean students.  At 10,500 students, Sogang is one of the smaller elite universities in Korea.  Its campus is both compact and user-friendly and is situated in a very safe area of Seoul, close to other great Korean universities.

South Korea is a highly developed, stable, democratic republic bounded to the north by North Korea, and squeezed between the great regional powers of China to its west and Japan to its east and south.  It is a land of breathtaking scenery.  The capital, Seoul, lies in the northwestern part of the country along the Han River, not far from the northern border.

The larger Seoul national capital area which includes the major port city of Incheon, has over twenty-one million residents.  This makes it the third most populous metrpolitan area in the world.  About one-half of South Korea's entire population lives in Seoul and its surrounding environs.  The city is the country's political, cultural, social, and economic center, as well as an international center for many financial and business organizations, and is considered one of the top 20 "world class cities".

Aside from the Friday field trips, international students will be able to experience more of Korea by spending time with Sogang University students through the university's Language Exchange Partnership.  All international students will be housed in the on-campus Gonzaga Dormitory.

For more information visit the Sogang International Summer Program (SISP) website.

Students must be in good academic standing, with no financial obligations to the college.  Applicants with a disciplinary record or pending disciplinary hearings should alert the Study Abroad Office.

Summer 2025 Program Dates

June 25, 2025 - July 25, 2025

In the mornings, students take language courses designed to help improve their fluency in conversational Korean. Using an integrated teaching method, students practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills and learn useful vocabulary and grammar patterns. Through group projects and classroom activities, students acquire practical speaking experience while learning about Korean culture.

Korean Language instruction is provided by Sogang University's Korean Language Eduation Center, which is renowned for educating learners to communicate in Korean efficiently. Students can earn 3 credits for the Korean Language Program. Upon arrival, students will take a placement test and be assigned accordingly.

Students spend the afternoons taking interactive culture classes. In addition, students take outings into the city with their instructors or teaching assistants to complete assignments that help them practice their Korean language skills in a real world setting. Destinations include historical sites and other local points of interest. Students also participate in culture-related group projects with Korean college students.
