Greece - HUMN 220: Humanities I in Athens 579

Summer
Athens, Greece (Map)

Humanities I is a required course for Geneseo students, and satisfies SUNY's Western Civilization general education requirement.  Based on great works, it examines the search for moral, social, and political alternatives and meaning in the institutions, culture, and literature of Western Civilization from its beginnings to 1600.  Students taking Humanities I in Athens for four weeks are not only made intimate with the published works of the period, they can actually experience the location of so much of the course's content--in Athens and through field trips.  There is ample free time to explore Athens and its surroundings and to take trips to places like the renowned Greek Islands.

Within the sprawling city of Athens it is easy to imagine the golden age of Greece, when Pericles ordered the building of the Parthenon, when the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides were performed in the Theater of Dionysus, and when democracy brought all citizens together to decide their common fate on the Pnyx Hill.  Athens is built around the Acropolis which the goddess Athena was said to have dropped as a bulwark to defend the city.  Dominating the Athenian landscape, the Acropolis is unsurpassed in beauty, architectural splendor, and historical importance.

Athens currently has over four million people and is packed with lively taverns and bustling shops.  The hosting of the Olympics in the summer of 2004 has resulted in many renovations and projects that have added to the reputation of the city as one of the world's top tourist attractions.  Our apartment residences and academic building are located in Plaka, the heart of the city's political, cultural, and social center.  Furthermore, the timing of our trip precedes the high-tourist season and highest summer temperatures.

The program includes a 4-day overnight excursion to Delphi, Nafpatkos, Olympia, Kalamata, Mystra, Sparta, Monemvasia, Mycenae, and Epidaurus to see ruins and archelogical sites, visit museums, and go to the theater. Also, new for 2019 the program will include an excursion to the islands of Mykonos and Patmos.

Students must be in good academic standing, with no financial obligations to the college. Applicants with a disciplinary record or pending disciplinary hearings should alert the Study Abroad Office. The course will have a limited enrollment. Geneseo students are given preference, however all students may apply.

HUMN 220, or 'HUMN I', is the first installment of Geneseo's Humanities-core requirement, and is a required course for all Geneseo students.  The course examines the moral, social, and political foundations of Western Civilization.  Students taking this course in Athens will have the chance to experience the location of much of the course's content.

While in Athens students reside in furnished apartments approved and arranged by the Webster University, one of SUNY Geneseo's academic partners.  Apartments are self-catering and include a washer for laundry (dryers are not common in the warm and dry Mediterranean climate). Apartments will be shared with other students on the program.

Professor Wes Kennison (kennison@geneseo.edu)

Pre-departure orientation is offered through meetings on campus. Non-Geneseo students will be oriented through published materials and personal communications with the Study Abroad Office and course instructor.
